Candles Light Night with La Descarga and friends

Candles Light Night with La Descarga and friends

Saturday, December 4, 2021 @ 7:00PMSat, Dec 4, 2021 @ 7:00PM

BAR 204, 204 broadway, RESERVOIR, 3073

ISU TAKI & La Descarga present: La Noche de las Velitas [Candle Light Night] To the sound of the drums and the rhythms of Afro-Colombian dance this night will heat up your soul.

ISU TAKI & La Descarga have prepared a special night at Bar 204 on Saturday 4 December to gather and celebrate light, romance and remember past times when candles were used to illuminate humanity’s life and celebrations. In Colombian culture (and across Abya Yala), candles have a special meaning. Candle Lights Night (Spanish: La Noche de las Velitas), held on December 7, is one of the most observed traditional holidays in Colombia. On this day, people place candles and paper lanterns on their windows, balconies, porches, sidewalks, streets, parks and squares, in short, everywhere they can be seen. It marks the start of the end of the year celebrations.

During cumbia dance, women playfully wave their long skirts while holding a candle, and men dance behind the women with one hand behind their back and the other hand either holding a hat, putting it on, or taking it off. Candles have been used for more than 5,000 years and we invite you to light another candle, dance and remember. Expect a ritualistic Afro-Colombian rhythmic and dance explosion. La Descarga is a tribute to the music and dance traditions of the Afro-Colombian regions from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia.

Light your candle at the Fiesta and start the end-of-year celebrations with us.

And if that's not good enough, ISU TAKI curated a DJ line-up to immerse you deeply into Colombian and South American musical diversity. It will display a selection of mestizo rhythms native to this incredibly beautiful tropical piece of land.

DJ line up: DJ Grace de las Nieves [Strictly vinyl Cumbia] Randy Castilla [Strictly vinyl Afro-Latin] Otorongo [Strictly vinyl Afro-Latin & Afro-futurism]

This event takes place on the stolen land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. ISU TAKI & La Descarga respectfully acknowledges elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge ancient knowledge not only from Kuli Nation, but all across both continents: Australia and Abya Yala. Always was, always will be.

$15 very limited early bird, $20 general/door.

This family friendly explosive afternoon will take you into a tropical land of traditional music, dance and performance from the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts of Colombia, in the drumming and jamming hands of La Descarga with special guests and supported by The Electropical Orchestra and Sabrosa Sound System DJs (Brisbane).

Cumbia music, inspired by the heartbeat, mixes the colour and spirit of Latin America, with the soul and feeling of Africa, and the passion and lyricism of Spain. It was born in Colombia, and continues to spread around the world, being recognised by many, as having the most infectious rhythm. Since 2010, La Descarga has been the forerunner and preserver of the cultural heritage and folk of Cumbia in Australia. La Descarga has played in many of Australia’s most recognised festivals including MOOMBA, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Darwin Festival, Brunswick Music Festival, Australian Multicultural Festival, White Night Melbourne, Reservoir Stomp and Darebin Music Feast.

"La Descarga celebrates the universal history of travelling cultures, fusions and Melbourne's own mix of converging sounds and traditions." Jess Fairfax, Easey

La Descarga is led by interdisciplinary artist Jorge Leiva and features award-winner producer Oscar Vargas, Melbourne’s leading gaita players Felipe Paz and Andres Carreño and recognised dancer and choreographer Kathleen Gonzalez, with Maria Paula Espinoza and Camila Gonzalez. The Electropical Orchestra, the extended family of La Descarga including Dandelion Jackson (Mr. Manifold and the Resolution, The Pirateska Rebellion), Lauren Mullarvey (The Cactus Channel) and Stefano Ioele (The Pirateska Rebellion) will also join the party bringing psychedelia, electronica and dub to the Caribbean and Afro-Colombian grooves.

The party will feature guest artists who have been part of La Descarga history, including Bonnie Smith (Reflejos), Oscar Jimenez and Katherine Gailer (Amaru Tribe), Javier Rodriguez (Dela Caye), Mauro Gomez (Madre Monte), Jay Scarlett (The Seven Ups), Coya Lee (The New Monos), Claudia Escobar-Vega (Miss Colombia), Luis Escudero and Claudia Vidal. Sabrosa Sound System DJ’s will be spinning dusty afro tropical & Colombian roots sounds! Cumbia, Guaguanco, Palenque, Puya, Porro, and more. Recently appearing for El Gran Mono picoteiro sound system, they’ll be warming things up for us throughout the show!

Expect a one-of-a-kind performance in Melbourne, with everlasting drumming, coastal visual projections, and first-hand experience with ancestral rhythms and sounds.

And remember, forget about the siesta and get down to the fiesta!

Cumbia Candle Light Night with La Descarga

Cumbia Candle Light Night with La Descarga

Wednesday, November 28, 2018 @ 7:00PMWed, Nov 28, 2018 @ 7:00PM

Open Studio, 204 High St, Northcote

To the sound of the drums and the rhythms of Afro-Colombian dance this night will heat up your soul. La Descarga has prepared a special night at Open Studio on Friday 7 of December to gather and celebrate light, romance and remember past times when candles were used to illuminate humanity’s life and celebrations.

In Colombian culture, candles have a special meaning. Little Candles' Day (Spanish:Día de las Velitas) held on December 7, is one of the most observed traditional holidays in Colombia. On this day, people place candles and paper lanterns on their windows, balconies, porches, sidewalks, streets, parks and squares, in short, everywhere they can be seen. It marks the start of the end of the year celebrations.

During cumbia dance, women playfully wave their long skirts while holding a candle, and men dance behind the women with one hand behind their back and the other hand either holding a hat, putting it or taking it off.

Candles have been used for more than 5,000 years and La Descarga invites you to light another candle, dance and remember. Expect a ritualistic Afro-Colombian rhythmic and lyrical explosion.

La Descarga is a tribute to the music and dance traditions of the Afro-Colombian regions from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia.

Light your candle at the Fiesta and start the end of year celebrations.

Entry $10 (includes a candle for you to light and wish…)
