Cumbia Candle Light Night with La Descarga

Cumbia Candle Light Night with La Descarga

Wednesday, November 28, 2018 @ 7:00PMWed, Nov 28, 2018 @ 7:00PM

Open Studio, 204 High St, Northcote

To the sound of the drums and the rhythms of Afro-Colombian dance this night will heat up your soul. La Descarga has prepared a special night at Open Studio on Friday 7 of December to gather and celebrate light, romance and remember past times when candles were used to illuminate humanity’s life and celebrations.

In Colombian culture, candles have a special meaning. Little Candles' Day (Spanish:Día de las Velitas) held on December 7, is one of the most observed traditional holidays in Colombia. On this day, people place candles and paper lanterns on their windows, balconies, porches, sidewalks, streets, parks and squares, in short, everywhere they can be seen. It marks the start of the end of the year celebrations.

During cumbia dance, women playfully wave their long skirts while holding a candle, and men dance behind the women with one hand behind their back and the other hand either holding a hat, putting it or taking it off.

Candles have been used for more than 5,000 years and La Descarga invites you to light another candle, dance and remember. Expect a ritualistic Afro-Colombian rhythmic and lyrical explosion.

La Descarga is a tribute to the music and dance traditions of the Afro-Colombian regions from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Colombia.

Light your candle at the Fiesta and start the end of year celebrations.

Entry $10 (includes a candle for you to light and wish…)

La Descarga ´Allá en el Río´ Single Launch

Saturday, March 4, 2017 @ 8:00PMSat, Mar 4, 2017 @ 8:00PM

Open Studio, 204 High St, Northcote

La Descarga will release its third single Allá en el Río (There in the river) on this special night of Colombian traditional music. The song is a currulao, an Afro-Colombian style of music originally from the Pacific coast of Colombia. Call and response chanting and horn section arrangements are important features of the style. Drums, percussion and the marimba are used as melodic and rhythmic instruments.

This song is inspired on nature. The rivers, oceans, mountains, seas, jungles and forests. The lyrics talk about our connection to nature, how we all come from nature and go back to it. It also reflects on the importance of taking care of nature and how it is affected directly by our actions. The message is to remember that we need to care of nature because we live thanks to it and its beauties can remain shining or disappear with our actions.

The night will feature special guests to be announced.

Event details: SATURDAY MARCH 4, 8PM, $10 Open Studio 204 High St Northcote Includes digital download of new single TICKETS ON DOOR
